Grass People Tree Mò Yá Low-Caf Red (默芽)

Grass People Tree Mò Yá Low-Caf Red (默芽) – A Naturally Low-Caffeine Wild Red Tea from Ancient Forest Trees

Mò Yá 默芽 (“Silent Bud”) is a rare naturally low-caffeine Red Tea made from wild, ancient tea trees growing in a remote forest in Guizhou, China. Unlike herbal tisanes or teas that have undergone decaffeination, Mò Yá is true tea made from Camellia sinensis leaves — they simply contain remarkably little caffeine naturally.

Years of observation and ongoing research by Grass People Tree’s tea makers identified individual trees in this unusual indigenous population whose leaves contain approximately 0.01–0.1% caffeine, compared with roughly 3–4% in the young shoots commonly used for premium loose-leaf tea.

The result is a remarkably smooth, gently energizing Red Tea with ripe cherry, almond and wildflower notes and a lingering sweetness that can continue through more than 15 infusions. It offers the depth and ritual of exceptional tea with considerably less caffeine, making it especially appealing for evening tea sessions, meditation or anyone seeking to reduce caffeine without giving up true tea.

Origin & Craftsmanship

  • Wild-foraged in a remote forest in Guizhou, China
  • Grown at elevations of approximately 1,600–1,800 meters
  • Harvested from ancient tea trees estimated to be 200–400 years old
  • Made from a distinctive indigenous population of tea trees with characteristics between small-leaf Camellia sinensis and large-leaf C. sinensis var. assamica
  • Individual trees are being identified and documented for their naturally low caffeine levels
  • Produced in intentionally small harvests with an emphasis on protecting the forest and allowing its natural rhythms to remain undisturbed

Flavor Profile

  • Fruity & Sweet – Ripe cherry and cherry-cola notes develop alongside a lingering natural sweetness
  • Nutty & Floral – Almond leads on the nose, complemented by delicate wildflower notes
  • Smooth & Gentle – Exceptionally smooth across repeated infusions, without sacrificing the complexity of an ancient-tree Red Tea
  • Enduring – Can continue developing flavor through 15 or more infusions

Benefits for the Drinker

  • Naturally very low in caffeine without undergoing a decaffeination process
  • Offers a gently energizing cup suitable for those seeking to reduce their caffeine intake
  • Well suited to evening Gong Fu Cha, meditation and other quiet tea rituals
  • Provides the experience and complexity of true tea for drinkers who might otherwise reach for an herbal tisane

Specialized Brewing Instructions

  • Water Temperature: 195–205°F (90–96°C)
  • Steep Time: 10–30 sec per infusion
  • Tea-to-Water Ratio: 5g per 100ml (Gong Fu style)
  • Best Brewed In: Gai Wan or small teapot for multiple infusions
  • Particularly well suited to Gong Fu brewing, where its cherry, almond, floral and sweet characteristics can develop over 15+ infusions
